The simplest way to tackle a stain on your tote bag is a spot clean. If you have a stain remover spray, just follow the instructions on the bottle. No stain remover to hand? Baking soda mixed with a little warm water makes a great paste alternative. Apply it, leave for a while, then scrub off. Alternatively, soak the affected area in a solution of white wine vinegar and warm water for a few hours before rinsing with fresh water.

If your whole bag needs a refresh then we advise handwashing your bag, using your regular washing powder and lukewarm water to wash your tote bag. Gently scrub your bag and try to avoid the print if possible as this can affect the colour and print if you scrub too hard!

Machine washing is not recommended because the wash and spin cycle can cause shrinkage and alter the colour and quality of your print. If you want to machine wash, we suggest using a cool low spin cycle. By doing this you should maintain the size and print but please do expect slight distortion.

For a fresh mark, a simple blot clean with hot water and soap usually does the job. Note that some bags, like our Jute totes, should only ever be wipe cleaned since other methods can cause them to lose their stiff structure and turn floppy.

Steaming is a great gentler alternative to washing a cotton tote bag. It smooths out creases, helps fade long standing discolouration and can even loosen stubborn stains. For an extra boost, add a few drops of essential oil or a scented antibacterial liquid to the steamer to tackle any lingering odours at the same time.
